Although most people know renting an apartment is more than just the monthly fee, you should be prepared to pay any required application fees, a security deposit and a month’s rent. Expect that your credit report will be run, so if you have any negative or inaccurate things on your report, you may want to take the time to get those off your report. Also, if you have had an eviction, know that although it is not impossible, it will be more difficult to find someone willing to rent to you. What most people do not consider is that some apartment rentals are negotiable. This is less true in larger properties managed by a property management company, but it never hurts to ask. If you know that the apartment has been empty for some time, speak up. In many cases, the property owner will want to get a well qualified renter in there than letting it sit empty for additional months.
